Where smart meets cool.
At KlassTutoring, every single SAT/ACT tutor has a college degree. No exceptions. Our tutors are graduates of some of the nation's top universities, including Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Yale, University of Pennsylvania, and Cornell, and most of our tutors have graduate degrees. (College education may seem like a no-brainer, but go ahead and ask our competitors about their tutors. You might be surprised.)
OK. So our tutors are smart. But they're also cool. And why on earth should you care if our tutors are cool? Because students do.
A tutor's most important job is not to have a PhD in rocket science. It's to connect with students. This is what tutoring is all about. Of course we look for intelligent tutors, and of course we work with them to ensure that each is an SAT/ACT master (yes, we work personally with every tutor, unlike the so-called referral companies), but we also make sure that they are patient teachers, clear communicators, and maybe even sympathetic friends.
And yes, one might even say they're cool.
Meet the tutors
We hope this list will give you an idea of the type of tutors we hire at KlassTutoring. Please compare our tutors to those of our competitors. Note that not all tutors are available in all locations or at all times.
Alex has a B.A. from Yale University, where he acquired a diversity of experience in Art (his major), Literature, and the Sciences. At Yale, he was recognized with a number of honors and awards, including the Fry Award for academic achievement, the Curtis Fellowship, and the Sudler Grant. He is currently working towards a Master's degree at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. In addition to tutoring, Alex's teaching experience includes working as a Teaching Assistant at Otis and working as a program coordinator for the International School of Management. Alex possesses exceptional communication skills and a natural ability to teach. (SAT Prep in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, and more.)
Asit studied Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics at UCLA. As a student fascinated by medicine, he has had extensive exposure to Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In high school, Asit took every AP class offered by his school and attended his rival high school for AP Chemistry and AP Physics. He scored perfect 5's on AP Physics, AP Calculus AB, AP Biology, AP US History and AP Government. (We call him Mr. AP around here.) At UCLA he tutored his peers as they took college chemistry and physics courses - guiding them through the difficult topics. He is an Honors student with multiple UCLA Dean's List awards. In addition, Asit is a head of a large pre-medical student organization and the co-founder of a pioneering public health pre-professional society at UCLA. Asit is equipped with academic know-how, extensive leadership experience and best of all great people skills. Outside of academics, Asit loves finding new music and he is wildly passionate about cars and motorcycles. We're lucky to have him. (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, and more.)
At KlassTutoring, all of our SAT/ACT tutors must be college graduates. Dave has met this requirement to the extreme, and then some. He graduated from American University with a degree in Political Science and a minor in Chemistry. He double-majored in Biology and Chemistry at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA. He also earned a master's degree in theatre from Purdue University, where, for his thesis, he analyzed the role of Albany in King Lear. (We're not sure how this last one makes him a great SAT/ACT tutor, but we still think it's cool.) Dave also worked in the U.S. Senate for a year and realized, after that experience, that he never wanted to work in government again. And frankly, we're glad to have him. Dave has been a tutor for almost 5 years now, including ACT/SAT, all levels of Math (up through AP Calculus), AP Physics, AP Chemistry, grammar and writing. But he's not just smart. Dave trained in improv comedy at the legendary Groundlings' Theatre School and has worked as a professional actor in Hollywood for over a decade. In other words, he's the kind of tutor who really has a knack for making positive connections with his students. Dave blends his academic know-how with patience and humor to help students reach their highest potential. He's one of KlassTutoring's best. (SAT Prep, ACT Prep, and math and science tutoring in San Fernando Valley, including Calabasas, Woodland Hills, Encino, Sherman Oaks, and more.)
Like several of our tutors--not to mention, the owner of the company--David graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned a B.A. in History. And since everyone who graduates from UCLA must be super smart (of course!), it was no surprise that he aced his online testing with KlassTutoring (0 - that's ZERO - misses). He first discovered the joys of tutoring when he worked as a part-time SAT/ACT instructor with Catalyst Prep during his last year of college. After graduating, David worked with students in need at the Los Angeles chapter of Minds Matter, an organization that focuses on tutoring and mentoring for students with low income backgrounds. All this looks fine on paper, but what really sets David apart is his ability to connect with his students. In what was a rare "perfect" Teachback with the owner of the company, David displayed tutoring abilities that go beyond education and experience. He simply "has it." David is absolutely one of KlassTutoring's best. (SAT Prep, ACT Prep, history, and math tutoring in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, and more.)
Dean started honing his tutoring skills at an elite private college preparatory school in Massachusetts, helping peers as part of the National Honor Society. He then moved to the bright lights of New York City, attending Columbia University, where he majored in English. In Los Angeles, he remains an active member of the Columbia alumni community, often asked to speak on behalf of the college at local schools and meet with prospectives. He's been tutoring professionally since 2010, and also has experience as a college essay editor. On KlassTutoring's SAT/ACT testing, Dean tested near perfect on the verbal sections - no surprise there - but his testing in math and science topics was also off the charts. Dean is personable and has a sense of humor, but he also knows how to push students to the high ends of their potentials. While his expertise lies in ACT and SAT prep, he also offers tutoring in humanities subjects and Spanish. Dean is a welcome part of KlassTutoring's team. (SAT Prep, ACT Prep, English tutoring, Spanish tutoring, and more, in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, and sometimes in the San Fernando Valley, including Woodland Hills, Encino, Sherman Oaks.)
A New Yorker by birth, Elias went "across the pond" for his college experience, where he studied at the top-five-in-the-world University of Cambridge. There he studied English and Italian literature, graduating in the top 3% of his class and winning the prestigious Cambridge Quarterly Prize for best senior thesis. But can he do more than write? Well, in high school, he received perfect 5's on his Calculus, Bio, World History, US History, French and Italian AP's (not to mention perfect scores in English Language and Literature), and during his KlassTutoring training, he missed only one math question (top 2%!). But without a doubt, Elias's true passion is for communicating and connecting: he's been a tutor since high school, and has worked as an (overly enthusiastic) tour guide in both America and the UK. He's been tutoring the SAT and ACT for years, with consistently stellar score increases for his students. For a tutor with a true love of learning and sharing deeply, Elias is as good as they come. KlassTutoring is lucky to have him. (SAT Prep, ACT Prep, English, writing, history, and math tutoring in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Beverly Hills, and Pasadena.)
How did Emma discover KlassTutoring? She used us herself! That's right, we've come full circle, and we're proud of that. And apparently our tutoring worked pretty well all those years ago when she sat at the other side of the table: she earned a full scholarship to Stern College's Honors program with her SAT scores. Emma studied philosophy as an undergrad and rounded out her studies with a post-baccalaureate program in psychology from Hebrew University of Jerusalem. At Hebrew U, psychology is one of the most competitive majors, with an intense emphasis on statistics and experimental psychology. All of that means that Emma is a well-rounded math/science/humanities tutor. But with Emma, academic background is not the only thing that she brings to the table. Emma's engaging, warm attitude makes her an exceptional tutor, with a gift for putting herself in the student's shoes and explaining subjects in ways that students actually understand. With Emma, students have a great tutor and an actual friend who knows how to speak their language. She's one of KlassTutoring's best.
Erin recently received her Bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia, one of the top public universities in the nation, where she majored in English Language and Literature. Throughout high school, she tutored her peers in subjects as varied as Trigonometry, Essay Writing, and AP Chemistry. During her career at U.Va, she led a literary-arts magazine and was literary editor of an alternative news magazine. On both of these productions, Erin edited and workshopped various prose pieces, so her experience teaching the English language is exemplary. Besides being able to teach English effectively, she's not so bad at writing it herself; Erin has had several short stories published in some of Charlottesville's top literary-arts magazines. Although her expertise may lie in reading and writing, Erin whizzed through both of KlassTutoring's Math and Science tests, as well, and she has plenty of experience tutoring all subjects on the SAT and ACT. All in all, Erin's academic skills combined with her winning personality make her a great asset to the KlassTutoring team. (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, Pasadena, Koreatown, and more.)
Jenna was born and raised in Simi Valley, where she graduated from Simi Valley High School with honors, acing AP Calculus (perfect score) and AP Physics in the process. With multiple scholarships, she began her college education at Brigham Young University's Department of Health, Recreation, and Human Performance. Missing the California sun, she moved back to L.A. and attended California State University, Northridge, where she graduated from the College of Health and Human Development with Summa Cum Laude honors. Awards include the Dean's Award and Tal Morash award for Outstanding Student in her major and the Jack Foley award for outstanding undergraduate student in her major. It's no surprise that she did great on KlassTutoring's SAT and ACT testing, scoring nearly perfect on every section. Whether leading students on wilderness excursions with CSUN's Outdoor Adventures, working with children at Camp Ronald McDonald, or helping students master the SAT or ACT, Jenna is a smart and dedicated member of the KlassTutoring team. (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in San Fernando Valley, including Calabasas, Woodland Hills, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Simi Valley, Northridge, and more.)
After graduating from Georgetown University magna cum laude, Josh decided to move to Los Angeles for the weather - and to pursue a career in screenwriting. In the meantime, he is excited to take on another one of his passions: tutoring. Josh studied Economics and Film at Georgetown, and has diverse interests that help make him a successful tutor in all subjects. He is particularly strong in teaching mathematics, as illustrated by his 800 score on the SAT Math section, but he also scored perfectly during our ACT testing in English and Reading (that's right: perfect scores!). At Georgetown, Josh participated in an after-school mentorship and tutoring program for elementary, middle, and high school students. He is results-oriented, but has a sense of humor and approachable nature that complement his academic expertise. He has a genuine interest in connecting with his students and provides a constant source of encouragement. With his unique combination of strong test-taking abilities, affability, and dedication to his students, Josh is a terrific tutor and valued member of the KlassTutoring team. (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, and more.)
Jun, one of our math/science tutors, is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where she earned B.S. in Chemistry and M.S. in Inorganic Chemistry. (We can't resist sharing the title of her thesis: "Synthesis of Metal Complexes Supported by a Mono-Substituted Ferrocene Ligand.") She has won numerous awards and scholarships, including most recently the Ethel Terry McCoy Award for Excellence in Chemistry and Biochemistry. For the past few years, she has worked as a researcher at UCLA's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. So yeah, she's pretty smart. She has been tutoring high school students since 2005 in all levels of chemistry, physics, and math, up through AP calculus. She also has experience teaching Mandarin in an after-school program for students ages 6-12. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, swimming, yoga and hiking. So if you need help with Ferrocene Ligands (or anything else related to math or science), Jun's your gal.(Math and science tutoring in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, and more.)
If you've read a few of our tutor bios, you know that we look for a combination of experience, smarts, and teaching skills. Ksenia has all three, but a good place to start is experience. She's worked for several different SAT tutoring companies before joining KlassTutoring. She was the lead mentor at CollegeSpring, the largest non-profit SAT prep company in the Bay Area. She also worked for College Track in Oakland, tutoring all subjects, including the SAT. She worked for Destination: College in El Cerrito, where she Developed curriculum and taught SAT preparation classes. Finally, she was a Teach for America-Los Angeles 2013 corps member. That's a lot of tutoring experience! Ksenia graduated from UC Berkeley with honors. Awards and honors while at Berkeley include California Alumni Association Leadership Award recipient and active membership of UC Berkeley's Prytanean Women's Honor Society. Ksenia is a tutor who we can safely say knows what she's doing, and she does it well! (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, and more.)
Kyle, one of our resident science tutors, graduated from USC with a B.S. in Chemistry. While at USC, he spent three years working in a research lab studying and developing environmentally friendly catalysts for use in fuel cells. One of his publications was called "Electrochemical Energy Storage in Iron Phyllosilicate Clays through Pseudocapacitance," which, as far as we're concerned, means his pretty smart. He also interned with an environmental consulting company to learn more about the environment and the policies that govern it. See a trend? Kyle's main career goal is to make the world a greener, more sustainable place, and he believes that helping young minds develop strong interests in science will do just that! In addition to tutoring, he is currently working at a biotech startup in Santa Monica developing safe and green alternatives to pesticides. With a strong background in the physical sciences, Kyle is a tutor extraordinaire, specializing in physics and chemistry tutoring. (Math and Science tutoring in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, and more.)
If you only remember one thing about Lauren, it should be that she is always up for a challenge. She studied off-campus at Oxford University and in the Yosemite High Sierra, where she studied post-Enlightenment philosophy and aesthetics, on her way to earning a B.A. in English. Although her interests range from winter backpacking to complex board games, her true passion is learning and teaching. She has experience coaching students in her university's Writing Center and has tutored students at all levels, from basic literacy to graduate-level writing. She's worked as an editor for the West Wind Literary Magazine and as a tutor for the Los Angeles Education Partnership. She was also the Business Manager for Oxford's science magazine, and a stellar student who graduated summa cum laude. And somehow, with all this literary background, she did great on our ACT Math and Science tests. With a warm personality and a mind that doesn't quit, we are proud to call Lauren part of our team. (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in Orange County.)
You know those people you meet who are jacks-of-all-trades? Madeleine is the queen-of-all-trades. And oh yes, a master of all of them. She graduated from Brown University with a BA in Theatre Arts and the minor equivalent in Applied Mathematics with an emphasis in Computer Science. She took her college Mock Trial team to nationals every year that she was on the team, and accumulated 3 All-American awards. In high school, she attended UPENN's SAAST summer program for coding, where for her final project she designed the winning "Tron" program. She currently coaches students from her high school in Speech & Debate and most recently coached a student to the final round at Nationals in Humorous Interpretation. You can find her tutoring students, designing web pages, or taking comedy classes over at UCB. We suppose it's no surprise that she completed her KlassTutoring training with some of the highest scores we've ever seen. Madeleine has been with KlassTutoring for years. She's one of our best. (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in San Fernando Valley and San Gabriel Valley, including Calabasas, Woodland Hills, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Pasadena, La Canada, and more.)
Mark studied at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Texas at Austin, where he received his Bachelors of Science in Radio, Television, and Film and his Master of Fine Arts in Theatre. While at UT he received the prestigious Special Award in Drama and graduated with Highest Honors. Mark is a great actor, but if there's one thing he doesn't have to fake, it's smarts. He first fell in love with the "game" of standardized tests after achieving Grand Level recognition during Duke's Talent Identification Program. Furthermore, he only missed a couple questions on our own SAT/ACT testing (99% in English, Math, and Science). He started tutoring in elementary school when his friend Jason was having trouble with multiplication tables, and he's never looked back: prepping students for the SAT and ACT, tutoring ESL in Taiwan, teaching Theatre at UT-Austin, and finding endless teachable moments for his dog Dewey. He brings positivity, warmth and exceptional communication skills to his tutoring. And you never know? You just might see your tutor on the big screen. In our book, that's a bonus. (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, and the San Fernando Valley.)
After finishing high school in Boston, Max used his 35 on the ACT (just one question away from a perfect 36!) to flee his hometown's notorious cold weather and envelop himself in the warmth of the SoCal sun. Before exchanging his snow pants for wetsuits, he excelled in all seven of his AP exams, including: U.S. History, Spanish, English (both Literature and Language courses), Biology, Environmental Science, and Calculus AB. For his efforts, he received a merit-based Presidential scholarship - a half-tuition prize - to attend the University of Southern California, where he received a B.S. in Biological Sciences. A Dean's List student, he was awarded multiple scholarships and research grants to fund his studies and laboratory endeavors during his time at USC. He now works as a researcher at UCLA broadening our understanding of the complex nature of cardiac disease. All this, and he's a great tutor, with a wonderful personality and unique talent for making positive connections with his students. Max is one of KlassTutorin's best (and most-overqualified!) tutors. (SAT Prep, ACT Prep, math, and science tutoring, available in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Culver City, Palms, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Westwood, Westchester, Inglewood, and more.)
Nathan is an excellent tutor with a truly impressive background. He graduated cum laude from Columbia University in 2014 with a bachelor's degree in Biology. He spent the past year doing medical research in Uganda and creating short educational films. Nathan has aspirations of becoming a doctor and was recently accepted to Johns Hopkins School of Medicine (!), where he will be matriculating Fall 2016. Until then, he will be pursuing his other passion: teaching! Nathan has extensive experience teaching Mandarin and has tutored English and math at Public School 76 in Harlem, New York. Nathan also participated on the Varsity Swim Team at Columbia, where he taught private swimming lessons for four years. Nathan has a natural ability to connect with students, as evidenced by his off the charts training scores. With his sterling academic background, extensive teaching experience, and great personality, Nathan is more than ready to help you reach your academic goals! (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, and more.)
Nils has an impressive and well-rounded educational background. He studied history, physics, philosophy, sociology, and political science at Yale College, new Haven , CT. He also took courses in statistics and philosophy at Evergreen State College in Washington and Cal State University, Long Beach. Nils's impressive education goes back to his excellent high school resume: he graduated from Polytechnic High School, Long Beach with honors, near perfect SAT scores, and perfect 5s on physics, Chemistry, US and Comparative Government, and US History AP exams. Considering his background, it is not surprising that he got perfect 800s on all three sections of the SAT given during KlassTutoring training. He has one-on-one tutoring experience working with students in mathematics. He also has experience as a Training Supervisor at Borders Books. Nils, young enough to still remember his own high school experiences, relates well to students. His diverse background as a student only adds to his strengths. (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in the South Bay and Orange County.)
At KlassTutoring, we look for a combination of education (smarts), teaching experience, and clear success during KlassTutoring training. Sarah excels in all areas. Education? She graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Scripps College, where she was also a James E. Scripps Scholar (academic merit scholar). (So she's smart.) She also performed wonderfully during her KlassTutoring training, where she showed above average communications skills and teaching abilities. And what about her tutoring experience, you ask? She has been tutoring professionally for over seven years, including working for Team Tutors in Los Angeles, where she taught reading, writing, math support, and ISEE; Think Tank Learning in Cupertino, CA, where she tutored the SAT; Scripps College, where she was a writing tutor; Claremont Tutorial Centers, where she provided reading and math support; and Peterson Middle School in Santa Clara, CA, where she was a teacher's assistant. She also holds a training/certification from the National Tutoring Association. When it comes to an excellent, well-rounded tutor, Sarah is the real deal. (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in San Fernando Valley and San Gabriel Valley, including Calabasas, Woodland Hills, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Pasadena, and more.)
After graduating from Yale with a B.A. in Political Science, Stephanie spent a few years trading bonds on Wall Street before moving to Los Angeles to pursue television writing (and, of course, shape the bright young minds of the city via KlassTutoring). Although Stephanie is a humanities buff, she is also well-versed in math and science, gaining (nerd alert) a perfect score on her SATs. That's right! 2400 out of 2400. And she backed that up by getting a perfect score on KlassTutoring's tests. Not one miss! It's not an exaggeration to say that Stephanie has literally never missed a question on a college-entrance standardized test. (Read that again.) Over the years, Stephanie has tutored students in a wide variety of subjects, from history, to English, to political philosophy, and, if she's really feeling generous, algebra. In all seriousness, Stephanie loves to help students reach their full academic potential both by teaching them the necessary tools to succeed, and by helping them stay calm throughout the rollercoaster ride that is high school. When Stephanie's not hitting the books, you can find her working for a comedy producer, taking improv classes at UCB, and attempting to parallel park. She's one of our stars! (SAT Prep and ACT Prep in West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, San Fernando Valley and San Gabriel Valley, including Woodland Hills, Encino, Sherman Oaks, Pasadena, and more.)
Will is one of our resident - well - geniuses. Fasten your seatbelts. . . . He graduated from UCLA with honors in Philosophy, while earning a spot on the UCLA Dean's List in each of four different majors. With a perfect 5 on six AP tests (including Biology, Calculus, English Literature/Composition, English Language/Composition, and Spanish Literature/Composition), a perfect 800 on the SAT Reading section, and a perfect 36 on every section of the ACT, he's well equipped to tutor just about anything. And tutor everything he has, whether it was coaching actors and singers, tutoring pre-calculus (in Spanish, no less), or lecturing for a Language Arts class while he was still in high school. He also worked 10+ hours a week doing one-on-one tutoring at the UCLA Undergraduate Writing Center, where he averaged a 96 out of 100 for overall performance. All this experience has cemented his belief that "good tutoring is a conversation, not a lecture, and that any student can learn just about anything with a little elbow grease and attentive support." He is certainly one of KlassTutoring's best. (SAT Prep, ACT Prep, and more in Los Angeles, West L.A., Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, and more.)
